Puppet Camp Day 3

During the 3rd day, the screen was introduced. The participating children are natural performers and were quite intrigued by the shadows created and with performing.

In the next two days a local artist specializing in puppets will join them as they will make puppets of characters in a story they have composed, and begin preparations for a presentation to be videoed on Friday.

Puppet Camp Day 1

This week we've been conducting our first try at making puppets, introducing children to various puppet styles from finger puppets, face-puppets, to larger shadow puppets. The making of the shadow puppet - as well as the performance - is a traditional art form in many parts of the world. On Thursday, a local artist, specializing in traditional puppets from India, will talk with the students and prepare them for their presentation on Friday. Hopefully this presentations will be videotaped and perhaps made available on you-tube.

Following each day's activities, we have a de-brief with all of our workers - this has turned into a growing fellowship around food with about 10 attending. In a relational culture, such activities are important to cultivate opportunities for Kingdom advance.

Another Day at Sewa Ashram

Janis, Moumita, and Tabassum concentrated on the 40 or so children today, leading them in a color-sun exercise, a pilot finger puppet activity, and an oil pastel drawing. Chuck & Shalem concentrated on the 50+ adults, leading them in a similar color-sun exercise, though with acrylic paints, and a garden painting emphasizing warm colors. Our interns, Melanie and Joy, along with Donna, a researcher with the Art for Change Foundation, rotated between the two different sites.

Shahpur Jat Kids "Finger Puppet Activity"

Periodically we host a free art activity for the kids in the neighborhood of the Gallery. This time we tried a "mini-pilot" of one of the activities we are planning  for the upcoming, week-long, Puppet Making Camp June 20-24. They first made a finger puppet showing some aspect of their personality (self-portrait or favorite animal), made a background scenery using oil pastels, then presented the puppet before the background in a short story. All of our helpers certainly enjoyed the activity and it seemed the 20+ kids from the neighborhood did too!

"Creative" De-Brief With Food For Hungry Team

We were able to participate with the debrief of a recent Food For The Hungry team that visited Delhi. Our part was to help the team process their trip through creative, visual activities. We also facilitated sharing by one of their team members in a "Creative Monday" exercise.

Art With Sewa Ashram

We also were privileged to visit Sewa Ashram in North Delhi to have a morning of Art making with the men and with the children. They always seem so interested in and excited about this opportunity to make art - most of us come away humbled by their outlook on life even though they are in such humble and difficult circumstances.
